We called the superintendent of schools about President Obama's scheduled speech to be directly piped into children's classrooms on September 8. Overall, it's good news -- they're going to respect our right no to participate. But we learned several interesting things.
1. The school district has received a lot of calls, starting yesterday. They began receiving calls before they even knew it was happening from the Department of Education. The schools didn't receive official notification until yesterday afternoon, and the principals didn't get word until late afternoon.
2. It is up to each individual principal to decide whether to air it or not.
3. If a principal in our school district decides to air it, the school must provide an alternate learning lesson for kids who are not participating.
4. A letter will be going home to parents, and we must sign to give our permission. Otherwise, without permission, a child will be given the alternate learning lesson.
All in all, a good response by our school district. I think the President needs to avoid this kind of kerfuffle in the future by giving no more live addresses to school children, and asking them to ponder such deep questions like "Are we able to do what President Obama is asking of us?"
