I was travelling to Kingsport, Tennessee with my good friend Josh this week, and he told me that they hung an elephant using "a crane or something" in Jonesboro, Tennessee. "Or was it Elizabethton?" he added. Josh said he thought the elephant had stomped a baby, or something.
I did a little internet "research, " and apparently nearby Erwin, Tennessee was actually the site of an elephant execution by hanging in 1916. The elephant's name was Mary, and Mary killed her handler and was thought to be a dangerous. (One lady's account at this link)
I wondered what it was like to be the town known for hanging an elephant. Or to be the town that didn't hang an elephant, but people nevertheless confuse your town with the elephant-hanger.
